I describe these works as surrogate self‑portraits. In my 2006 Master of Fine Arts study into 'Persona' and 'Duality', I used my childhood doll as a metaphor for myself.
Carl Jung wrote that the Persona is “the mask each person wears to face the world.” It shapes how we present ourselves and how others perceive us.
In this body of work, I explored two ideas: the Persona—our public and private faces—and the concept of duality.
I was interested in how the doll could reveal multiple possible personas. These photographs show many versions of the same doll.
By photographing the doll, I aimed to look beneath the Persona and expose a broken, imperfect version of it. Through this process, I came to understand that a Persona always exists alongside a hidden Self, revealing a state of duality.
