2016 and 2017 abstract paintings

In this work my inquiry is around the concept of painting as mark-making. These works are not subject based and lie within the genres of gestural abstraction and lyrical abstraction. The works reference the importance of mark-making as a mode of expression, the gestural nature and bodily scale of this mark-making process, and the notion of trace which indicates the presence of the artist in the work. These works are large and the bodily scale of the paintings shows the physicality of my process.

To view these paintings, select "New work 2016 and 2017" above.

I am a colourist, painter and mixed media artist. My current paintings are large, energetic and visually powerful.

I am a graduate of both Elam School of Fine Arts, (Dip FA) and Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design (MFA Hons). I am also a qualified high school teacher (DipTchg).

I have had twenty solo exhibitions and have exhibited in around thirty group and collaborative shows. In the early part of my career I enjoyed painting landscape and I frequently traveled overseas to paint landscape in France and Italy. I have worked and exhibited in Jordan.

Materials and techniques I have worked with include oil paint, acrylic paint, mixed media, and photographic techniques. I have always enjoyed exploring the possibilities within techniques and materials. In 2000, "International Artist" magazine, published in USA, ran an eight-page article featuring me and my mixed media technique, in which I combined gouache and oil pastel.

In 2006, as part of a decision change the essence of my artistic practice and provoke my thinking, I commenced study for a Master of Fine Arts degree. My graduation exhibition TIME SPACE LIGHT was held in January 2008, and I was awarded Master of Fine Arts with First Class Honours.

From 2009 to 2015 with Colin, my partner, I lived and worked in Europe. We returned to New Zealand and now live between Mangawhai Heads and Auckland. I have established my painting studio in Mangawhai Heads. Since returning to New Zealand I have been working on large abstract paintings.

My next exhibition will be at artHAUS Orakei from February 15, 2018.
